Why Atton?
I love him. There's no other way to say it. He's messed up, and he's made mistakes, but his story of redemption (if you take the light-side path) is incredibly touching. I really wish the game hadn't been cut so badly, because some of Atton's most moving moments happened in the removed ending sequences.
If you take the Dark Side path, though, Atton is delightfully creepy. There's a certain sinister appeal to his evil side. He throws himself completely into the darkness - although he really starts not looking too good by the time he achieves Dark Side mastery.
